Selection Procedures

The United States will field a partial team to represent the USA National Team at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships.  The team size will be determined by or about February 15, 2009. 

    The two highest placing finishers at the 2009 World Youth Trials   (June 30 –         July 1; Ypsilanti, Michigan), will be considered for selection to the team                   provided that they have met the following criteria:

1.Have met the qualifying standard and entry guidelines set by the IAAF for               the 2009 World Youth Championships. Please note: In order to be eligible             to compete, wind-aided marks in the 100m, 200m, 100m Hurdles, 110m               Hurdles, Long Jump, and Triple Jump will not be accepted, and all                           qualifying standards must have been met during the period January 1,                    2008 to June 22, 2009.

2.Eligible to represent the USA in all levels of international competition                      based on the Competition Rules of USATF and the IAAF.

3.Born in 1992 or 1993.

4.Have a current passport good for at least 6 months after return from Italy. It             is preferred that athletes have passports with them when they enter the                   team sign-up area at the 2009 World Youth Athletics Trials however,                       athletes MUST present a valid passport (or a copy to the team processing             staff no later than 8:00 pm ET on July 1, 2009.

At the completion of the World Youth Trials a selection committee will evaluate the performances of all athletes who meet the above criteria and will then select athletes to fill the available slots (number of slots to be determined on or about February 15, 2009) based on current conditioning and projected ability to finish in the top 8 at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships. 

Information Related to Obtaining a Passport

a.There are new passport rules dealing with minors, which makes                               processing more difficult. For more information on acquiring a passport,                please visit http://www.travel.state.gov or your local post office. 

b.USATF will NOT assist the athlete by:
  • Paying passport fees
  • Paying passport expedition fees
  • Traveling to a passport office to assist an athlete with obtaining a                   passport
  • Paying for passport photographs
  • Paying for an athlete's transportation to a passport office

Athletes MUST have a valid passport (or copy) with them at the World Youth         Trials or be able to provide a copy of a valid passport no later than 8:00 pm           ET, July 1, 2009 with an expiration date of at least January 2010 in order to           be considered for selection to the team.

There will be no exceptions to this policy.
